Embark on an Incredible 7-Day Journey Along the Machame Route

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Hut

Your adventure begins at the Machame Gate. The first day’s trek takes you through the lush and dense rainforest, a serene and captivating environment that introduces you to the unique flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro. Your destination is Machame Hut, a cozy camp nestled in the heart of the forest.

Day 2: Machame Hut to Shira Cave

As you ascend, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail leads to Shira Cave, offering glimpses of the vastness of the Shira Plateau. The transition from the dense forest to the open moorland is both exhilarating and inspiring.

Day 3: Shira Cave to Lava Tower, Barranco Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Your path now takes you to Barafu Camp, the high camp that serves as your base for the summit attempt. As you ascend, the environment becomes more barren, and the anticipation for the summit grows. Spend the evening at Barafu Camp, preparing for the ultimate challenge.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit, Then Mweka Hut or Millennium

Summit day has arrived. In the early hours, you’ll embark on the steep ascent to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The sunrise from the summit is a moment of unparalleled beauty and triumph. After celebrating your success, you’ll descend to either Mweka Hut or Millennium Camp, relishing in your accomplishment.

Day 7: Mweka Hut or Millennium to Mweka Gate, Moshi or Arusha

On your final day, you’ll descend through the lush rainforest, a stark contrast to the high-altitude terrain you’ve conquered. The vibrant vegetation and birdlife add to the charm of the descent. Your journey concludes at Mweka Gate, where you can reflect on the profound experience you’ve had before returning to Moshi or Arusha.

More than 30,000 hikers visit the famous mountain, known as the roof of Africa, each year, drawn not just by its height but also by the panorama it offers. While scaling Mount Kilimanjaro is not for the faint of heart, many trekking aficionados have it on their bucket list to reach the mountain’s snow-capped summit.

The dry season, which lasts from June to October and December to March, offers beautiful scenery, a clear view, and a high success rate for summit attempts.

In our opinion. The Machame Route comes in second, followed by the Lemosho Route, while the Rongai Route comes in third.

The gateway to both Kilimanjaro and the safari is Kilimanjaro International Airport. From there, you’ll be driven an hour to Moshi town or an hour to Arusha City for the night. Drive to the gates of the Kilimanjaro mountain park the following day.

You need all of the equipment from the Kilimanjaro Climb Gear List as well as layered clothing because the summit is extremely cold.
